Details:
JOHN T. CASHIN Jr., class of 1953, passed away on Janury 26, 2010, at Englewood Hospital in NJ. A Funeral Mass was held on Saturday at Sts. Peter & Paul R.C. Church, Hoboken. Interment was in the Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington. John was born in the Bronx, NY on October 2, 1931, attended Regis High School in New York City and graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School. He received a BS in marine engineering from the New York Maritime College at Fort Schuyler and a MS in mechanical engineering from CCNY; he also completed business and management courses at Pace University, Stevens Institute of Technology and CCNY. He was a longtime member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. John was a teacher, both officially and unofficially. As the former, he taught members of the maritime union those subjects needed to upgrade their licenses. He had a curious mind and was happy to share his knowledge with others. His avocation was music; his primary instrument the trombone. As a teenager he assembled his own band. In later life he played with many New Jersey marching bands. His co-workers called him Jolly. He was that and so much more. Loving, judicious, kind, witty, humorous, curious, and smart. John served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Afterwards, he sailed the world as a marine engineer, achieving his chief engineer's license in both steam and motor and later adding nuclear power technology and a professional engineer's license to his list of credentials. Over the span of his career, he worked for several notable engineering firms, spending the last 20-plus years with New York City Transits Capital Program as a Mechanical Engineer. The devoted husband of Anna Mae, he was the loving father of John T. Cashin III and Ellen DeMasi and her husband, Peter; devoted grandfather of Amelia, Abigail, and Kieran; dear brother of Patricia Cashin and the late Cecilia Brown. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
