MARTIN B. BERNSTEIN, class of 1955 passed away on March 29, 2010 among his family and friends.
Marty was a graduate of Far Rockaway High School, the SUNY Maritime College and Brooklyn Law School. His public service included positions as an Assistant Attorney General of the State of New York, a Councilman of the Town of Hempstead, Long Island, and a director of the Long Island Power Authority. He was a successful real estate developer and investor, and long before recycling became a household word, he founded Ponderosa Fibres of America, once the largest producer of recycled pulp in the world. He went on to finance various ventures and served as a director on numerous educational and private boards, and worked tirelessly to give senior citizens in New York City better, safer lives. Marty's interests ranged from Saturday afternoons at the opera to following the exploits of Jack Bauer in "24". He was an avid bibliophile whose curiosity ranged from serious studies of World War II and the Civil War, to the big, contemporary novels of Philip Roth. He is also one of the few who read all twenty of Patrick O'Brien's Aubrey-Maturin books; still, he found time to read three newspapers a day as well as "The New Yorker" every week. He loved a round of golf and a game of poker with his buddies, and watching the New York Jets with his boys.
