Otto L. Liepin (1946) reports on the passing of
CAPT. RICHARD AVESSIE USNR. Captain Vessic was a sailor most of his life. He grew up in Baldwin, Long Island and after graduation from NYSMA Oct. 1946, he sailed for several companies including US Lines.
He was called up for active duty in the Navy in 1957 and remained on active duty reaching the rank of Capt. Our class mate, Capt. John O'Donnell writes, "During my final tour of duty as Deputy Chief of Staff for the Naval Reserve program in the Fifth and Sixth Districts I and Capt. Richard Vessie along with Capt. Jake Jacobsen, All NYSMA grads in year 1946, managed the Naval Reserve Programs in five Naval Districts which contained about 75% of the drilling Naval Reservists of that time. Capt. Vessie passed away earlier this year, 2006 and so it goes with our class of 80 year old grads.
We gave life our best shot and maybe in the sands of time, we have left a footprint.
